Kauppatori | Market Square

From fresh herring in October to Finnish pastries to souvenirs, Helsinki's Kauppatori is Helsinki's most central and popular outdoor market square. Fringed by cafes and bustling with locals and tourists, Kauppatori is an ideal place to start a day of visiting nearby Helsinki attractions.

Kaunissaari Island

Part of Southern Finland's outer archipelago, a necklace of pristine islands off Finland's icy coast that are a haven for outdoor adventurers, fishermen and campers, Kaunissaari Island is one of the most popular. With a Nature Information Hut (open during the summer months) featuring exhibitions on the natural flora and fauna of the region and camping grounds, a restaurant and a few small shops, Kaunissaari Island has a touch of civilization in a rugged environment.

Built in the 1880s, the Ateneum Building is itself a work of art. Ornate and austere, the Ateneum Building houses the bulk of Finland's fine art, over 20,000 pieces, including works by Finnish masters as well as international giants like Van Gogh and Marc Chegal. Helsinki's Ateneum Art Museum also features a bookshop, a small café and guided museum tours in English.

While Helsinki Zoo does have a collection of animals and plants from the Amazon and more tropical areas (housed in buildings to shelter them from the very foreign Northern climate), the main draw is Helsinki Zoo's cache of Artic animals. Think reindeer herds and wolverines. Helsinki Zoo, located on Korkeasaari Island, also features a snowy safari expedition through the native habitat of polar foxes, Musk oxen and artic owls.

Nykytaiteen Museo | Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma

Opened in 1998 as a new center for the modern arts, including performance art and experimental film in the Kiasma Theatre, Helsinki's Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma is a community-driven organization offering education programs and art seminars. For visitors, the permanent collection includes over 9,000 works of contemporary Finnish and Scandinavian art from 1960 and later.

Pihlajassari Recreational Park

A short motorboat ride from downtown Helsinki, Southern Finland's Pihlajassari Recreational Park is an island wonderland in the summer months. Local Helsinki joggers, bikers and families (the Finns have a strong tie to nature) flock to the set of two mini islands, complete with sandy beaches and restaurants, for a respite from Helsinki's urbanity.

Sukellusvene Vesikko | Submarine Vessiko

Fighting over the land with Russia in World War II, Finland used submarines in their offensive. When the fighting ended, Finland destroyed all of its submarines, save one, the Submarine Vessiko. It is now a Helsinki tourist attraction for visitors wanting to rehash recent military history and explore the bowels of a submarine.

Suomenlinna Fortress

Once a maritime fortress protecting Southern Finland from invaders and would-be conquerors, Suomenlinna is now a unique Helsinki attraction and World Heritage Site. Built in 1748, Suomenlinna was a massive effort, including an imposing King's Gate, Barracks, a church and a labyrinth of underground tunnels. Just 15 minutes by ferry from Helsinki and open year round, Suomenlinna is a magnificent site in either summer or winter.

Suomen Kansallismuseo | National Museum of Finland

From prehistoric times to the present, the National Museum of Finland explores the evolution of Finnish life. An archeological museum, the National Museum of Finland features five departments, notable among them is the Treasure Trove, home to ancient coins and weaponry. The National Museum of Finland also features rotating exhibits exploring particular aspects of Finnish life and culture.

Tahtitorninmaki | Observatory Hill

Up the hill from Helsinki's Market Square, Tahtitorninmaki Observatory Hill is a serene park with stunning views of Helsinki, the surrounding Gulf of Finland and the nearby Suomenlinna Fortress. The site of an Observatory built in 1833, Tahtitorninmaki also features a memorial to the victims of the Hapsburg shipwreck.

Temppeliaukio Church | Rock Church

One of the most popular Helsinki attractions, Temppeliaukio Church or "Rock Church" is a modern masterpiece. Carved into a rock outcropping and topped with a massive copper dome, the cavernous walls of this working Lutheran church are an acoustic dream for Temppeliaukio's famed organists.

Well Park | Kaivopuisto

A sprawling park filled with thousands in the summer months playing sports and bathing in the midnight sun, Kaivopuisto is Helsinki's version of New York's Central Park or San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. From summer concerts to the historic Ursa Observatory to the Kaivopuhne restaurant and nightclub, Kaivopuisto is a popular Helsinki outdoor attraction.
